POP Email on BeyondUnreal

Go ahead. Log into that free web-based email account you've had for the past year or more. What do you see in your inbox? If you're like most people, you've got an impressive collection of spam and virus-laden messages. Our own records show that approximately 4/5 of all email is either spam or the result of a virus. Is that what you really want to wade through, day after day?

Why a BeyondUnreal POP Email Account?

  1. BeyondUnreal runs qmail, the most powerful and secure email server on the internet.
  2. We have had no unscheduled email downtime in over a year.
  3. While spam and viruses cannot be entirely eliminated, we use several tools to reduce the amount of these materials:

    • SpamAssassin - SpamAssassin is a very popular open-source spam filtering tool that learns as it goes. Messages tagged as spam will have a header something like:

      X-Spam-Status: Yes, hits=14.2 required=7.0

      and

      X-Spam-Level: +++++++

      added, as well as the word [SPAM] in the subject of the message. This makes it very easy for you to filter on those headers and dump indentified spam into a private folder.
    • Blackhole Lists - BeyondUnreal employs several frequently-updated blackhole lists to protect against incoming spam. As new 'open relay' email servers are discovered by these organizations, they are added to the lists of blocked sites. BeyondUnreal fetches these lists on a daily basis, and utilizes the lists to block thousands of known spammers.
    • Procmail - we utilize procmail rules to block emails that contain attachments that usually are the result of viruses. These attachments include .pif, .scr., .bat., .vbs., .shs and .exe. We also use procmail to scan incoming emails for known spam patterns in emails, such as "this is not spam" (chuckle), and block them from ever reaching your BeyondUnreal POP mailbox. While this is not true virus scanning, something all Windows clients should have installed on their own machines, you'd be surprised at how few viruses make it through this simple scan.
    • IP Banning - since new spammers pop up every day, we need a way of quickly dealing with them, often times before they are blocked by the above two methods. BeyondUnreal routinely blocks IPs of known spammers, redirecting their waste of bandwidth into the black hole of the internet, away from your BeyondUnreal mailbox.

  4. BeyondUnreal runs our own email server, and technical support is only a click away should you have any questions or problems.
  5. We do not have hard-coded file attachment size restrictions. Many free web-based accounts limit your ability to receive large file attachments. While we don't want our accounts receiving 200 meg files via email, we understand that gamers need more flexibility than they can get on other POP email services.
  6. Several forums, including BeyondUnreal and the official Infogrames forums, no longer allow the use of many free web-based email accounts if you want to sign up as a member. Whole websites are following suit. With a BeyondUnreal POP account, you have a legitimate, secure and accepted email account with which to sign up.
  7. You are an Unreal-engine gamer. What could be cooler than having a yourname@beyondunreal.com email account?
  8. If you have your own domain name, and control of your domain name server (DNS), BeyondUnreal can easily support your whatever@yourdomainname.com email address. This service is available at no additional cost.
  9. New virus-scanning! We've installed ClamAV, an open-source virus scanner, which works along with our qmail-scanner to wipe out viruses before they get to you! Virus definitions are updated hourly. Powered by ClamAV
